Welcome to your dance home!
Who We Are
Our mission is to inspire adult dancers to connect with the most powerful part of themselves, while finding joy and building confidence in our supportive, welcoming community.
If dancing is what makes you feel happy, alive, powerful, and confident, then we want you to continue (or begin) to do exactly that. We focus ONLY adults, so you are our priority. Moreover, we strive to create a welcoming, supportive, uplifting, and inclusive atmosphere. We aim for a no-stress class setting, with fun being a priority, and a healthy dose of challenge sprinkled in to build your confidence. There is a place for you here!
We welcome adult dancers of all different backgrounds, goals and abilities. Whether you dance professionally, just for fun, or to continue challenging and training yourself, we give you opportunities to do so through our weekly jazz, hip hop, contemporary, tap, theater, ballet, pro dance team style, and technique dance classes.
We are not a traditional dance studio with tuition-based programs. We know you have a full life with work, school and family commitments, so you can pay as you go per class and come when you can. If you want more of a consistent commitment while saving some money, we have options for that as well.
We believe:
Human connection is key.
It is never too late to start dancing again, no matter what age you are or how long of a break you have taken.
If dance is what makes you feel alive and powerful, then you must DANCE!
Our values:
Inclusiveness
Hospitality
Professionalism
Gratitude
Kindness
Fun!
Relationship-development (we hear, see and know you)
Community-focus
Safe space
Encouragement & support
Classes are held at Candlelight Dance Club (1990 Marlton Pike East, Cherry Hill, New Jersey).
What We Offer
We offer in-person dance classes to adult dancers over age 18, in various styles, with rotating instructors 5 days a week! We post the schedule one month at a time, typically at the end of the preceding month.
Frequently asked questions
What styles do you offer? Ballet, tap, contemporary, theater jazz, pro dance team style, heels, hip hop, jazz, jazz funk, street jazz, and Latin Fusion. Occasionally we offer specialty series such as jazz technique or a specialty style, such as Afro Dance.
What level are classes? Most are taught at an intermediate pace/level, meaning, a solid foundation in dance is assumed and strongly suggested to help you feel confident in class. However, we are beginning to offer more beginner and advanced beginner options as well! Some classes will be more challenging than others depending on the teacher and your experience and strengths. We encourage you to try many classes until you find your niche! Check this page out for more details about levels.
What are the age restrictions? You must be at least 18 years old to take class because we are passionate about giving adults the opportunity to continue to pursue their love of dance. You can be 19 or 99! Nobody is too old to dance or take a Powerhouse class.
Do the same teachers teach every week? A few of our classes have set instructors each week. Otherwise, the instructors and styles rotate. This keeps things interesting and fresh and provides you with exposure to various teaching/choreography styles and personalities.
Do I have to be a member? While we do offer a monthly membership, anybody can dance with us using our drop-in/single class option! Visit our class schedule, select book a class, and will be prompted to create a profile on Mindbody from which you can then continue to register for classes. You can come as often as you wish and we always welcome new dancers!
What if I haven’t danced in years and I am nervous? This is normal and very common for many people who initially start dancing with us. We are happy to recommend specific classes or teachers who may be easier to start with to help you ease back in to dance. We also suggest setting your expectations: know that the first few classes will probably feel challenging mentally and physically, and that’s okay! Stay open-minded. The rust will fall off if you show up consistently!
The dancers is your videos look professional and very fit. What if I am not like that? We assure you there is a wide variety of dancers in our classes, in terms of body-types/shapes/colors, and experience level. Most of our dancers do it for the love of dance! There are definitely some dancers who attend who are professional or pre-professional, but we welcome all: we just want you to dance!
About Jenny, Founder
About Jenny: Jenny De Tore is a lover of drinking coffee, being cozy, and DANCING! As much as she loves dancing, she thrives while helping others live their best lives through doing what they love (dance). She loves connecting people through their mutual passion for movement, and she is committed to providing a place for adults to continue (or start) to BE DANCERS and grow and learn.
How Powerhouse came to be: Jenny created Powerhouse Dance in 2017 to fill her own need for an adult dance class. She wanted a class that was challenging but not overwhelming, that incorporated new choreography every week, in a positive, welcoming and supportive environment. Jenny found that after college there were not many opportunities in the suburbs to pursue dancing in a challenging, high-energy way. Most classes were either geared toward pure beginner adults, toward extremely serious professional adult dancers, or were open to both adults and kids. Jenny wanted a class purely focused on adults, and that met the happy medium between fun/let-loose vibes and serious training.
As a result, she created Powerhouse. Our first class was on August 9, 2017 and since then over 1000 dancers have come to class. They come to dance and they stay because they thrive in an atmosphere that is open and non-competitive.
Jenny’s dance journey: As a kid in south Jersey, Jenny’s earliest memories of dance are choreographing with her sister and friends every chance she could. Her parents instilled in her a love of music, which translated into a passion for moving to music. Jenny began formal dance training at age 9 at Today’s Dance Center in Medford, New Jersey. After moving to Naples, Florida Jenny joined the high school dance team and subsequently the college dance team and company at the University of Florida.
After graduating from the University of Florida with Bachelors and Masters degrees in accounting, Jenny moved to New York City where she worked for a global accounting firm. After 4 years, she relocated to Philadelphia, still working in accounting. During these years, Jenny drifted away from dance, only occasionally taking classes. Dance took a back-seat as she focused on career and beginning her family.
Desiring to get back to herself and reconnect to dance, Jenny created Powerhouse in 2017 after moving back to South Jersey.
Jenny is so thankful for the dancers and instructors who make Powerhouse what it is. She has always felt her most powerful, happy, and strong self while dancing and loves to see the same for others!
What else is Jenny up to? In addition to leading Powerhouse, Jenny is also a lululemon Ambassador for the 2023-2024 season. She has also been honored to be a guest instructor for the Philadelphia Soul Mates, The College of New Jersey’s dance team, Rowan University’s Dance Extensions, Drexel University’s Dance Team, Shawnee High School’s dance team, & Ocean County Day of Dance. She has also been a guest judge at the Miss Delaware Competition (part of the Miss America Organization), and at auditions for the Philadelphia Wings, Drexel University, and Shawnee High School dance teams. She resides in South Jersey with her husband Matt and son Ben.
