Class Description: Open to dancers age 18+.This 3-week series is geared toward dancers who are comfortable and confident taking our Beginner level Contemporary classes, but who do not yet feel ready to take our drop-in Intermediate level Contemporary classes. This series is intended to help dancers start increasing their skill and comfort level with contemporary dance. This Part 1 series will be the next step on the path towards dancers joining the intermediate level contemporary classes. Skills that we will work on include: expanding choreography retention, musicality, speed, improvisation, beginner floorwork, transitions to/from the floor, and beginner leaps and turns. Our goal is to build multiple parts of this series that will continue to progress beginner level contemporary dancers to feeling ready for Intermediate classes.

Week 1

  • Learn a new warm up series including demi & grand plies, coordinated arm patterns, and tendus/degages/fondues/grand battements. We will break down each exercise to understand the correct placement and goal for each combination.

  • Learn 1-2 across the floor exercises focusing on transitions to and from the floor, beginner level floor work, and increased speed travelling

  • Learn a 30 sec combo incorporating new movements.

Week 2

  • Review the new warm up series.

  • Review last week’s across the floor exercises, as well as learning 1-2 new skills. New skills this week will be focusing on turns and leaps.

  • Learn a 30-40 sec combo incorporating new movements.

Week 3

  • Go right into the warm up as if it were a regular class.

  • Review all across the floor skills from the series. Touch on the concept of improvisation in contemporary dance.

  • Learn a 40-45 sec combo using all skills learned during the series.

Level Description: This is an Advanced Beginner Level Series. Some dance experience is recommended for this level. If you have at least 1 to 3 years of dance experience, or you have many years of experience but have not danced for a long time, this level could be a good fit for you. Additionally, if you are newer to dance and have tried the beginner classes but they feel too easy, yet the intermediate classes feel too challenging, this level is for you. Class will have a focus on choreography, however you may review the basic and foundational steps of the style within the framework of the combination taught in class. You will most likely not learn how to execute basic and foundational steps within this level. Choreography will be taught at a slower to moderate pace with a clear breakdown and instruction, and you may see minimal technical elements (such as leaps and turns) and floorwork. Choreography will be around 30-50 seconds in length, with low to moderate complexity and slow to moderate tempos. Movements within the choreography will most likely repeat.
